Recap of the Craft Fair and Etsy Shop News

Hi!

So the craft fair was yesterday.

It was really fun πŸ™‚ It was a great experience and it (and other random events this weekend) really made me want to start expanding the business side of my sewing. I had really good reactions to my stuff. People seemed to respond well to the things I liked the most, which makes me feel better about my taste. (I was having doubts.)

All in all, I made $70.Β Honestly, that’s better than I expected. I would have liked more, but things didn’t quite go as planned….

(Note: please take all following comments with the knowledge that I live in Southern California where it was almost 90Β° earlier this week and where we cannot handle rain or “cold.”)

I probably would have made more had I stuck around, but it started pouring around noon and it was already freezing (like 50ΒΊ). As soon as it started raining, people started disappearing. I planned to stick around, but when the water started dripping through the tarp above my head, I called it quits and had my mom come rescue me.

I seriously don’t know how you people who live on the East Coast do it.

Anyway, I have a lot of stuff left over that I didn’t sell. I’ve had an Etsy shop for a while, but I’m just getting back into it.

I’ll be posting everything I didn’t sell on my Etsy shopΒ in the next few days. I’ll also be posting some of my old dresses and projects and possibly a PDF pattern and tutorial or two.

In the next few days, I’d really like some feedback from you all about my listings, what projects from my blog you’d be possibly interested in buying, and what you think of me expanding my blog into a business in general.

I’ve been thinking about it and this is something I think I’m committed to doing. I don’t want to change much around here (I’mΒ definitely not going to monetize my blog specifically or make it one of those obviously corporate ones); instead I’m going to focus on expanding into Etsy.

Until the end of March, you can get 15% off a ($10 or more) purchase in my store with the coupon code: FORMYBLOGGERS. I’d love it if you checked out my store πŸ™‚

So, what do you think about this step in my sewing future?

  1. I purchased some items from you at the craft fair: a lined paper pencil pouch and a cloud coin purse. Both are adorable. Best of luck with your future craft endeavors. I hope to have a chance to buy more of your creations in the future!

      1. I am hoping to grow (START) the business side of things for me too! I just need to make some stuff and photograph it and then list it! If you can do it then hopefully I can too!

  2. I am a bit sceptical (and do not mean to offend, but you asked for our opinions). First of all, people out there are not willing to pay what handmade stuff is actually worth it. When I look at your picture, you sold a purge/bag for 10$. Just calculate what the fabric/zipper costs you and in relation how much time you spend to make one (cut fabric, sew bag together, make and attach label). What is your hourly wage then? 5$? Even if you theoretically sell more articles at once, the hourly wage will not rise to one that is comparable with a normal job. Keep also in mind that for a business you HAVE to sew what others want you to sew. The higher the demand for one article, the more you will make of that one. At one point there will be not a lot room for creativity anymore. This is what I would fear most. In Germany, the sewing/crafting boom had started a few years earlier than in North America. Dawanda (that’s our Etsy) is now full to top with handmade things. As the competition is big and people (if they are honest) always want to buy great stuff for a few coins, prizes got pushed down. That’s so sad. Please do not get me wrong. I am convinced that you will have a great Etsy presence and will attract a lot of customers, but it also is a hard and unstable business, which on top of that might ruin your joy in being creative and making things. But, of course, Samantha, I wich you all the best for whatever you are going to do!!! Jana
